It was clear that there would be long fight to stop the spread of Russia rule in Europe. Czechoslovakia was taken over by the communists early in 1948. Later that year, England and several other countries in western Europe made an agreement.

This agreement said that if one of them was attacked, the other would help. This agreement showed that the countries were afraid of an attack by Russia. In 1949, the United States and a number of other countries set up an organization to oppose Russia.

This organization was called The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Each country in NATO agreed to help the other countries in case of attack. This was the first time in history that the United States had made this kind of agreement during peacetime. American leaders realized that the problem of the rest of the world were American’s problems, too.

The spread of the communalism in Europe was stopped, at least for a time. But Russia was soon at work in another part of the world trying to take over new land. This time, the cold war turned into a ‘hot’ or shooting, war.
