When a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic medium, it loses water by osmosis. The osmotic pressure of the cell is lower than that of the medium.

The vacuole decreases in size and the cytoplasm shrinks as a result of which the cell membrane loses contact with the cell wall.  The cell becomes flaccid. This  process is described as plasmolysis.

Refered Question.
