The vapour pressure of water at 18.0°C is 2.053Pa. The vapour pressure of a solution containing 5.13g of a solute in 100g of water is 2.021Pa. Calculate the molar mass of the solute.
Solution.
(p° – p) ÷ p° = m1/m2 × M2/M1
(2.053 – 2.021) ÷ 2.053 = (5.132÷100) × (18.0÷M1)
(0.032÷2.053) = (5.132 × 18.0)÷100M1
M1 = 59.46g/mol.
