Statistics is the science of collecting, classifying and analysing information by using numbers. In geography, statistics refers to the exact numerical act collected systematically to be uses for different geographical purpose. Thaes can be number of visitors to museum and national parks, students enrolled in secondary school by levels, annual rainfall totals and temperature, number of eggs collected daily, the amount of money collected by business person pee week and number of car accident.

All figure found in written documents are knows as statistics. Person who colllecta, classifies, analyses present and interprets at a is known as statician. Statistics deals with a collection of information known as data. The main importancea of statistics are;

(a) Statistics data facilitate in land use planing service allocation and provision of other service such as education, health, food supply and water.

(b) Statistics data facilitate in forecasting future trends of geographical phenomenon such as earthquake, drought and floods.

(c) Statistics also facilitate different geographical phenomenon such as climate, commodity production and population growth.

(d) Statistics data (Raw and bulky data) are easily summarized by statistics for easily interpretation and visual explanation.

(e) Statistics are uses to present accurate measurement such as percentage and degrees instead of using relatives or descriptive words. This meansbthat people become more objective in decision making because statistics testing is bases in mathematical theory.
