An electrochemical reaction is a process in which electrons flow between a solid electrode and substance, such as an electrolyte. This flow triggers an electric current through the electrodes, causing the reaction to liberate or absorb heat.

In electrochemical reactions, an oxidation is essentially the loss of electrons found on the surfaces of an atom, ion or molecule. The opposite of oxidation is reduction, which is the gaining of lost electrons. In these reactions, the oxidation numbers change accordingly. This can be illustrated by a balanced half reaction. This reaction is non-spontaneous, where electricity is used to allow the reaction to occur, versus a spontaneous reaction, which generates electricity .

chemical reaction is the change of a substance into a new one that has a different chemical idproducts. A chemical reaction is usually accompanied by easily observed physical effects, such as the emission of heat and light, the formation of a precipitate, the evolution of gas, or a color change. Absolute confirmation of a chemical change can only be validated by chemical analysis of the products. The following are the difference between the electrochemical reaction and chemical reaction:-

(a) Chemical reaction electron transfer from one species to another takes place directly in the same medium while Electrochemical reaction Electron transfer from one species to another takes place indirectly through electrodes.

(b) Chemical reaction energy is liberated in the form of heat, light and sound while in electrochemical reaction energy is liberated in the form electrical energy.

(c) The chemical reaction is instantaneous proceeding at a finite rate while Electrochemical reaction takes place only on the application of electricity.

(d) In chemical reaction redox reactions take place in the same medium while in Electrochemical reaction eedox reaction takes place separately at the Anode and cathode surface.
